HDMI identifies Ultra96 capabilities and allows different implementations. See the official HDMI documentation. For DisplayPort, UHBR20 reaches a raw 80 Gb/s: VESA identifies link levels and their corresponding certifications.

DSC, bit depth, and subsampling are different things

Luminance detail and color detail

4:4:44:2:24:2:0

YYYYYYYY

Color at every pixel
Luminance and color detail are preserved at every position. This is the starting point for text and desktop use.

Enlarged samples: Y represents luminance; the lower blocks represent pairs of color components. Chroma subsampling is not reducing bit depth or applying DSC.

DSC: compression for transport

Display Stream Compression reduces link data volume. VESA defines it as visually lossless: it is designed to make compression imperceptible, but that does not mean all data remains identical bit for bit. The devices involved must support it.

I would not reject a monitor simply because it uses DSC. I would check whether its specific combination with your graphics card limits features you need, particular multiple-display configurations, or resolution modes. This is an implementation issue, not an automatic visual penalty.

8 or 10 bits per channel

More bits allow more signal levels per channel. They do not expand panel gamut or make HDR good by themselves. Moving from 8-bit to 10-bit RGB raises bits per pixel from 24 to 30 before compression and link overhead.

4:4:4, 4:2:2, and 4:2:0

Subsampling reduces spatial color information. It can help fit a signal within bandwidth, but desktop use warrants checking fine text and colored edges. For that use, I would seek RGB or 4:4:4 whenever the hardware allows. A signal that “displays an image” does not guarantee it preserves all the information you expected.

How to choose without buying blindly

Find the exact resolution, Hz, and color-depth combination for each input in the manual.

Check your GPU, laptop, or console output and VRR compatibility over that specific connection.

Choose a cable certified for the required capacity. “Gaming,” “8K,” or connector appearance does not replace certification.

Avoid unnecessary adapters.
