It depends on the panel, its optical structure, and surface treatment. Try removing the light hitting the screen: if the tint changes with it, do not immediately mistake it for an incorrect RGB setting.

Not every QD-OLED or generation behaves the same way. Look for examples of the exact monitor.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" id="negros-levantados-luz">
Black looks gray in ambient light

An off pixel emits no light, but the screen can reflect incoming light. OLED black in darkness and perceived black in a bright room are therefore different situations. Checking screen and light orientation is usually more useful than raising contrast.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" id="glossy-vs-mate-oled">
Glossy or matte: the reflection’s shape changes

Glossy usually preserves a more defined reflection; matte diffuses it. Neither guarantees eliminating it. Surface texture and optical structure also matter. The screen finish guide with an interactive example lets you see that difference.

</details>

Uniform backgrounds and small text

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" id="banding-oled">
WOLED banding

WOLED uniformity banding can appear in dark grays and smooth camera pans. Check whether the bands stay in the same area with different content. This is not the same as gradient steps or video compression.

Also judge real scenes. If it remains prominent in your use, save examples and explore options for having the unit checked.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" id="rejilla-woled">
Banding and grid effect: how they combine

On some WOLEDs, vertical banding is accompanied by more regular lines in both directions. The result resembles a grid over grays: wide bands and the grid can be visible together. Visibility depends on the model, unit, content, and viewing distance.

The example above lets you add that grid. It does not represent an inevitable issue on every WOLED and should not be confused with matte-finish texture. TFTCentral shows both effects in its tests of some Tandem WOLEDs.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" id="text-fringing-oled">
Colored edges on text

Fringing can occur when font rendering interacts with a subpixel layout different from the expected one. Resolution, size, scaling, and panel generation affect how noticeable it is.

Test text in your applications and check their smoothing. It is not enough to claim every WOLED or QD-OLED looks the same; these families contain different layouts.

</details>

When image brightness changes

More area, less available intensity

White area <output data-area aria-live="off">10%</output>

2%10%25%100%

White intensityMedium

A small detail can concentrate more brightness. It can reduce available luminance as image load increases. On the desktop, this may be noticeable when maximizing a bright window.

Some monitors offer a uniform-brightness SDR mode that reduces these changes by limiting the maximum. Check its actual effect and do not confuse it with a screensaver or protection that dims a static image over time.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" id="apl-oled">
APL: describes the image, not a brightness mode

Average picture level refers to the image’s average content under the definition used in the test. Sustained brightness adds the time dimension: how long it holds. A window covering 100% of the screen describes its area, but does not by itself prove that the figure was sustained for a long period.

Compare equivalent windows, HDR mode, duration, and measurement conditions. The value for a small detail does not predict a snowy scene or a white desktop.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" id="pq-eotf-hdr-oled" open>
PQ/EOTF: the scene looks brighter or darker than expected

The curve relates the HDR signal to the intended luminance. Different tracking can lift midtones or darken details. Tone mapping adapts content to what the monitor can reproduce, so highlights and clipping also need attention.

The Windows brightness control will not necessarily fix it. A typical PQ EOTF uses signal level on that axis. These are invented teaching curves, not product measurements. A temporary mark does not establish permanent wear. Watch how it develops and avoid repeated manual cleaning cycles without following the manual.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" id="burn-in-oled">
Burn-in: persistent uneven wear

OLED emitters age with use. If some areas work differently for long periods, persistent differences can remain. Load, brightness, temperature, and content matter; no universal number of hours guarantees or rules out the problem.

Protections reduce risk, but do not make the panel immune. Check warranty coverage for the model and country before buying if you will display static elements for many hours.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" id="protecciones-antiquemado-oled">
Protections and maintenance cycles

Pixel shift, static-element detection, and compensation cycles serve different purposes. Let automatic maintenance run according to the manual, and avoid cutting power if the manufacturer says a cycle needs to finish.

Not every cycle or product has the same recommended frequency. For example, Sony explicitly limits long manual panel refreshes on certain TVs. This shows why you should not apply another product’s procedure to your monitor: follow its own instructions.

</details>

Flickering and lost detail

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" id="vrr-flicker-oled">
VRR flicker: changes with FPS

On some OLEDs, changes in frame timing become visible as brightness fluctuations, especially near black. Menus, loading screens, and scenes with unstable FPS can make it stand out.

Check whether it disappears with a fixed refresh rate or more stable performance. An FPS cap can help in certain cases, but is not a universal solution. Distinguish this effect from signal dropouts or strobing illumination.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" id="clipping-posterizacion" open>
Clipping and posterization

Clipping loses distinctions when multiple levels end up at the same extreme; posterization produces visible steps where a smooth gradient should be. Content, compression, signal range, bit depth, and processing can all play a role.

Check a reliable source, the output format, and picture mode. Enabling 10-bit output does not recover information already lost in the file or correct inappropriate tone mapping by itself.

Preserving differences in highlights

MapClip

<text class="gv-svg-small" x="55" y="48">Display limit</text><text class="gv-svg-small" x="323" y="298">Input signal →</text>

When highlights are compressed, different levels remain distinct.
